Arsenal has made an ‘unbelievable signing’ with the arrival of the Chelsea forward Willian, says Paul Merson

Paul Merson claims that Arsenal is getting a ‘special player’ because Willian is preparing to make a free transfer from Chelsea to north London.

The 31-year-old reportedly settled on a three-year contract to join the Gunners after having fallen into negotiations about a potential deal to stay at Stamford Bridge.

The Brazilian made it clear that he needed a three-year contract, but Blues chief Marina Granovskaia was reluctant to give in to his expectations before the season was interrupted by the coronavirus outbreak.

And Merson, Sky Sports pundit, thinks the first move from Mikel Arteta this summer is a very shrewd business.

“I know he’s 31 and wanted a three-year contract but football is all about now, and right now he’s a great player. No manager is thinking about what might happen in three or four years’ time.

“They need results now, so it’s no surprise to me Frank Lampard doesn’t want him to go. Arteta won’t be Arsenal manager forever. He needs to win now. Willian can help him do that.”

Leaks on Friday indicated that Willian was ‘upset and offended’ that Chelsea did not want to keep him in the club, but Frank Lampard quickly moved to refute any unrest rumors.
