Welcome to Chelsea: Xavier Mbuyamba new signing by the blues

Chelsea has completed the signing on a three-year contract of Barcelona wonderkid Xavier Mbuyamba to improve their defensive ranks.

According to the official website of the club, the center-back will go straight into the development squad of the Blues before the first team can hopefully make its mark.

Mbuyamba spent the bulk of his youth career at Dutch outfit MMV Maastricht, making his debut at the tender age of just 16 in a second-tier Eerste Divisie game in November 2018.

He spent time trialing with the Blues, after making ten appearances with the senior squad. And last summer the club was unable to sign him because of their transfer ban.

Instead, this time last year he joined Barcelona and played a key role at the Under-19 team , making three appearances at the UEFA Youth League group stages.

It’s no wonder the Netherlands Under-19 youth international has received comparisons to Virgil van Dijk, standing at 6 ft 4ins and with an unerring degree of confidence on the pitch.

His physical size and strength in the air would seem to make him perfectly suited to the Premier League ‘s demands, but it is known that he will have to wait for his chance.

But Mbuyamba will be bolstered by the confidence that Frank Lampard put at both Derby County and then Stamford Bridge in youth players during his spells.

Mason Mount and Fiyako Tomori were his Rams side permanent fixtures last term and have played plenty for Chelsea this season while Tammy Abraham, Billy Gilmour and Reece James all figured prominently under Lampard for the Blues.
